Huskers 5-4 lose two key players

Texas 28  Huskers 25 .... Mostly a fun game to watch....

Senior Lance Brandenburgh, Nebraska's most consistent linebacker this year, is  out for the year. He suffered a shoulder injury.

Senior Sam Keller, the senior quarterback for the whole year, is also lost for the season. Except for two errors in the last quarter, he played an excellent game.

Nebraska is now dead last in the nation in rushing defense, a stat that will certaininly be on the minus side of Doctor Tom's evaluation of the coaching situation........

Joey Ganz will be the quarterback for the rest of the season. He threw a TD pass and the extra points pass in the last waning minutes of the Texas Game.

Most of the nation got to see an exciting three quarters of play ruined in the last quarter by two long runs by the Texas back who is also the Big 12 sprint champ.............

Next game is Saturday, November 3rd at 1130 at Lawrence Kansas against the undefeated Kansas team. Fox Sorts Network will carry the game...

It is going to be tough to win two of the last games remaining to qualify for a bowl game.... but this old fan will be cheering them on ... win or lose.

Husker Fall to 4 and 4

It is going to be tough to have a winning season or get to a bowl game.... Would anybody spend the money to go anyway ?

I think that Dr Tom's presence did shake things up abit. Callahan worked with  the defense more last week and shared the game play calling with his offensive coordinator Watson on the side line.....

And they tell me the tunnel walk reverted to the old days' music and videos.... didn't win the game though...

Texas  is next in Austin on Saturday October 27th at 2:30 CST and will be on ABC regional TV. My Texas daughter and her hubby are going to this game from their home in Sugar Land, TX. I hope they find something to cheer for....

And the following week, November 3rd,  the Kansas game will be on Fox Sports Network at 1:30 PM.

Rumors and sports writers are all but calling for Coach Callahan  and staff to resign now or at the end of the season or to be fired at that time.......

I guess we loyal Cornhuskers fans will have to grit our teeth, look for individual good plays and moments, and continue to fly our Husker Flags and Windsocks, wear our red shirts and team ball caps, and wait until next year...AGAIN !

    We All Are, Coach

“I felt coming into the year that we had a good team,” he (Callihan) said. ... “I’m not sagging. I’m just disappointed. I’m really, really disappointed.”

    Perception vs. Reality

"I know in my heart of hearts I'm doing an excellent job," he (Callahan) said.

That's probably a minority opinion in Nebraska. Under Callahan, who ditched the program's traditional I-formation option offense in favor of the West Coast passing attack, the Huskers are 26-18 overall, 14-14 in the Big 12, 3-8 against teams in the Top 25 and 0-6 against Top 10 teams

Doctor Tom to head the Athletic Department For awhile anyway

    Released on 10/16/2007
    Office of University Communications
    University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Lincoln, Neb., October 16, 2007 -- In a new development in leadership changes in the athletic department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced today that Tom Osborne has agreed to serve as director of intercollegiate athletics on an interim basis.
Osborne left his head coaching post at Nebraska in 1997 after 30 years coaching football, including leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers to three national championships, 12 Big Eight titles and one Big 12 title. Osborne's teams finished in the top 10 17 times. He ended his head-coaching career with a record of 255-49-3.
Osborne left his post as 3rd district U.S. representative following a gubernatorial bid in 2006. He has been a senior lecturer in the UNL College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics.
Osborne met with Perlman this morning to discuss the interim post and Osborne agreed to serve, on an open-ended arrangement, until Perlman finds a permanent athletics director. Perlman on Oct. 15 fired Steve Pederson, who had held the AD post since 2002.
Osborne said he looks forward to the challenge.
"I've spent the majority of my life working with the Athletic Department at the university and I want to do what I can at this point to continue in the pursuit of excellence that has been previously established," he said.
Osborne said he anticipated taking over duties right away and would also finish the semester teaching his two classes, which he enjoys.
Chancellor Perlman said he is pleased that Osborne agreed to provide leadership and that the university will benefit from Osborne's vast experience.
"I am very pleased that Tom Osborne has agreed to help bring some leadership and direction to our athletic program. Tom is committed to making the entire program successful. He brings the right experience, an understanding of Nebraska, and our aspirations. I look forward to working with him."

    Husker Athletic Director Fired

Athletic Director Steve Pederson was fired on Monday, October 15, 2007

How is this going to help the present football team? Probably not at all, but could make a difference if Coach Callahan is fired by a new Director.

How likely is that to happen in mid-season.... Who know?

    October 14

    Next Game

Nebraska and Texas A&M will meet at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th in Lincoln with no TV.

    I wonder why ?

    Yikes !

Yesterday in preparing for the Oklahoma State game I didn't put up the Husker flag and windsock, didn't put on my red shirt, and didn't wear my Husker ballcap..... reverse psychology ???  It obviously didn't work...

45-14 is a pretty big loss, especially when it was 38-0 at the half.

Coach Callahan got booed and yelled at as he left the field.

In his post game press conference he said that he felt sorry for his players but that he is not worried about losing his job and won't consider assistant coach changes in the middle of the season.

I guess I don't understand why we didn't pass a whole lot more when we were so far behind in the last two games. I would think that all theories about a balanced attack would fly out the window after 7 games. Let's open it up and give quarterback Sam Keller the game to win or lose......

The Huskers meet Oklahoma State in Lincoln at 11:30 AM on Saturday 10-13-2007 on Pay per view TV

The Huskers get dropped for the polls top 25 listings........

Coach Callihan says he hates to lose...Duh !

    October 09

    Pooo

What is a loyal Husker fan to do ?

Nothing seems to get better for the Cornhuskers.

The defensive schemes really stink... for instance ... the Missouri quarter back Chase Daniel made 473 yards passin and running.........

Three times this year the Huskers given up more than 40 points ... in the last four games, yet....

The offense failed to get a touchdown. While quarterback Keller threw 25 for 43, mostly patsy passes to the relief back or other short passes. Where were the touchdown bombs when NU was 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 touchdowns behind.

Lucky ran for 70 yards in 17 carriers and caught 7 passes ... mostly dump-offs when Keller couldn't find open receivers.

That again didn't mean anything when they were behind by 2, 3, 4, and 5 touchdowns....

Maybe Head Coach Callihan should let his offensive coordinator call the plays and he could spend his game time helping to prop up the defense ... That coordinator needs lots of help.........

Oh Yeah ... my prediction of only one loss this year went down the drain and I don't care to try to predict the rest of the year...

Well, next Saturday we will again put up our Husker flag and our Husker windsock, wear our red shirt and Husker cap and listen to the game  ..What else can a loyal Husker fan do ?

    Nebraska 35 Iowa State 17

NU stayed at 25 in the AP Poll listing but dropped one place to 23 in the USA Today coaches Poll despite winning their game and despite teams above them in the polls losing......

Bo Rudd has scored two touchdowns in the last two games with good runbacks of intercepted passes.

Hey coach ... Lets put in a couple of plays for him at the I-back spot that would get him into the open field where he really took off on those two touchdown runs.

If the defense cannot get off the field ... allowing 90+ plays ... what chance does the offense have?

Gotta admit the defense was good on not allowing a lot of scores........

Next game is at Coumbia Missouri on Saturday, October 6th against Missouri at 8:15 PM on ESPN.

It has to be a stepup game for the Huskers if this loyal, optimistic fan' prediction of an 11-1 season is to hold up....
